Sprinkler System Backflow Preventers

What is a Backflow Preventer?

A backflow preventer is required for any sprinkler system supplied from culinary water (drinking water). It prevents the undesirable reversal of flow of liquid, gas, or suspended solid into the potable water supply.

Why Do I Need A Backflow Protection Device?

A Backflow Preventer protects drinking water from contamination in the event of a loss in pressure from the supply. If you're unfamiliar with backflow preventers, research your area's specific requirements, as they may vary.

Types of Backflow Preventers

PVB: Pressure Vacuum Breaker

The PVB is a popular choice for backflow prevention. It's easy to install, meets most requirements, and is cost-effective. Follow manufacturer guidelines for proper installation. Note: PVBs don't protect against back pressure, so avoid using them in systems with pumps or secondary water supplies.

The RP offers the best protection for sprinkler systems connected directly to pressurized culinary/potable water systems. While it's typically the most expensive option, it provides superior safety for your water supply.
